My friend Rachael plays for a women’s (duh) Rugby team, the Flint Sirens, who was here for the Toledo Invitational Tournament hosted by the Toledo Celtics. You can assemble the acronym yourself. (I really should have bought one of the shirts.) I should mention that since they were merged with the Grand Rapids Renegades for this tournament, they were actually more like GRint.
I had a great time (watching the games), caught a great tan (shooting photos) and suffered great mental trauma (witnessing a rather large man streaking during an initiation ritual.)

I’ve been doing some research online because I want to start using a remote camera for some assignments. They’re really useful for putting a camera where you can’t or aren’t allowed to be or for use as a second camera angle while you’re shooting from another position. One tool that’s helpful is a camera platform, a base-plate (low to the ground or another surface) that will securely hold the camera in a pre-set position to be triggered either by hard wire or radio remote.

I’m afraid I don’t have an elaborate story for this one. I shot this in the rich early morning sunlight at the request of my boss, Jeanne Hartig. She really does have an eagle-eye for great images, even though I was never able to convince her of that.

I had my ‘nerd time’ over the weekend.
The new incarnation of photodan.net has been up for a while without a Web statistics program to tell me about the hordes of people flocking here. (hordes, trickle… don’t hassle me on the details, man) It tells me so many things like what time people visit, what browser they’re using, what site they’re visiting from… all kinds of cool nerd junk.
What ended up being the most interesting though, was the information telling me that my server was responding to many image requests from another Web site. In real non-geek talk that means, someone is using my images on their site without permission, they are not giving me any credit for creating them and, best of all, I’m paying for the bandwidth for them to do it. WHAT A DEAL!

I was out taking photographs at the MAC track championships being held in Toledo today. Track meets can be difficult due to the fact that several events are usually going on at once but the bad weather was clearly the biggest obstacle this time.
(Tip: If you ever have to shoot out in the rain, a simple bath towel to place over your gear is your best friend. Yes, I know my new Canon equipment is supposed to be able to survive rain of up to 10″ per hour but that doesn’t mean I’m eager to test that particular theory.)

The sand in the long-jump pit appears to shatter as April Williams lands during competition in the MAC track championships. Williams finished third in the event with a jump of 6.19 meters.

Despite the rainy weather, fans were still having a good time cheering for their school at the MAC track championships being held at the University of Toledo.

Ebba Stenback is surrounded by a curtain of water as she passes through the water jump during the 3,000-meter Steeplechase at the 2006 MAC track Championships. Stenback won the event with a time of 10:14.55, the third fastest performance in MAC Tournament history.

Oh wide angle, I have missed you so.
Those of you who have transitioned from a film to most any digital SLR know that all your lenses have suddenly had their magnification increased by an extra 50%. That means that your beautiful 28mm lens is now acting like a 42mm. YIKES, bye bye wide angle! (but HELLO, telephoto!) With my Canon EOS 10D, this is a fact I had to grudgingly get used to.
Not any more.
The university just purchased a brand spankin’ new Canon EOS-1Ds Mark II, featuring a gorgeous full frame sensor which gives my super-wide angle back to me. I couldn’t resist running out and giving it a test the very first day I had it.

More previously taken photos, brought to you by the slacker in me.
I was down in Mobile, Alabama to photograph the GMAC Bowl and festivities for the University of Toledo this past December. The night of the Mardi Gras-themed parade, I was wandering the parade route looking for anything interesting before the festivities got rolling. As I passed a large group of people on a sidewalk, I saw a flash of color from behind them and decided to stick around to see if there was a decent photo to be made.
